This is wholly irrelevant. It has nothing to do with attach rates and
would actually be a good argument for why the Xbox 360 sold better at
launch than the Playstation 3 did... except for the fact that the
Playstation 3 sold better in terms of real numbers since there wasn't
enough supply of the Xbox 360.

This is a dubious argument. When the Xbox 360 first came out, it was
the most expensive mainstream console to hit retail in the history of
video games (I don't count niche systems like the Neo Geo).

Yes, the Xbox 360's price point is below the Playstation 3's and
always has been, but that doesn't mean the console is cheap. It's more
expensive than what gamers have been used to buying. The fact that it
had a 3.9 attach rate at launch simply shows that the games were
compelling enough for people to spend the extra cash.

The low attach rate for the Playstation 3 implies only 1 of 2 things:
that the games just weren't compelling enough or that many of the
people who bought the system were just looking for a cheap Blu-Ray
player.

Putting it another way... if games like Metal Gear Solid 4, Ratchet
and Clank, Gran Turismo 5, Uncharted, Haze, Heavenly Sword, Warhawk,
etc. were all available at launch, don't you think the attach rate,
not to mention the hardware sales, would have been much higher?

If the games are compelling enough, people will spend the extra cash.

That's all fine and good, but 80% is still not AAA by any definition.
That's a B-, which I'm sure many kids are fine with getting in school
but none would claim is an A+, an A or even an A-, LOL.

console. 97,000 copies of R&C given the install base is impressive by

I especially like that Disney got pissed about Paramount's "sell out" for
the MS cash, so they have come out and said "we're going to begin marketing
our blu-ray movies". Up until that point you hadn't really seen any

It wasn't just Disney. Up to that point, Fox, Disney and MGM had been
pretty lackluster with their releases. As soon as Paramount made their
announcement, Fox fired back with announcements of a slew of titles
for early 2008... many more than they had released in all of 2007.

I'm sure Warner Bros. is waiting to see if Wal-mart and K-mart can
sell the Toshiba HD-A2 to those consumers less willing to spend $300+
on a next-gen movie player.

If those two retailers can help HD-DVD make headway, Warner likely
won't change their approach because they won't want to give up that
kind of money.

The big question, of course, will be if the increased sales are
sustained over time. There was no significant sustained sales increase
with the last price reduction - which is why there is another so soon.
Saying the PS3 outsold the 360 3-1 on after a price drop is about as
impressive as saying the 360 outsold the PS3 5-1 following the release
of Halo 3. Both were tied to "big" events.

I don't think it will be just a sales spike this time. The new price is
looking a lot sweeter now for regular good sales. I don't think it will
every sell as well as the 360 in the US, but here in the UK and Europe
it might over take it in total sales.

I noticed they show a clip from Pirates of The Carribean in Blu-Ray"
and they have at least doubled the frame rate of the clip to help make
it stand out more. Theatrical movies are shown at around 24 fps and
many HDTV's have a feature called 3:2 pulldown to help simulate this
effect even.

So my question to those with HD-DVD and Blu-Ray is: do you notice a
change in frame rate vs DVD?

you don't get it do you. CELL can be used to HELP the RSX in graphics,
but only to an extent. CELL can take the load off of RSX by doing the
polygon calculations, skinning, clipping, vertex operations, lighting,
etc...but CELL cannot make RSX render/display more pixels or more
polygons than what RSX is able to do by itself. CELL doesn't push back
RSX's limits in pixel fillrate or polygon DISPLAY.

the Xbox 360's Xenon CPU can help the Xbox 360 GPU also, don't forget
that. not that Xenos really needs much help from Xenon anyway, but it
can be done.

PS3 can do some great looking games when properly programmed for, but
it's not any kind of leap beyond what can also be done on Xbox 360
when properly used.
